Lehigh 12/28 - Robert J. Burdette Indoor Classic An old wise coach once said, “you can’t have too many Christmas cookies or too many medals.” For the CB East Patriots, the latter was true on Saturday December 28th as they partook in the Robert J. Burdette Indoor Classic at Lehigh University.
It certainly didn’t take long for the Patriots to get going as the experienced team of seniors Michael Forcina and Gavin Pettigrew teamed up with juniors Luke Blackwell and Holden Emery to earn a silver-medal in the opening event, the Sprint Medley Relay. Leading off, Emery earned a personal record of 54.20 in the 400. Forcina and Blackwell followed with personal bests in each of the 200 legs with a 24.01 and a 23.65 respectively. The team beat the Meet of Champions' standard by two seconds and snagged a fifth-place medal for their efforts.
Although there were several standout individual performances, it was senior Jack McManus who rose above the rest when he captured a gold medal in the mile. The moment the gun went off, Jack shot to the front of the pack and set the pace for everyone else, refusing to give up the lead when challenged multiple times in the final laps. The 4:35.50 was not only a five-second personal record, but also a Meet of Champion-qualifying mark.
Apparently, one medal wasn’t enough for Emery’s appetite as he powered his way to a silver in the open 800 with a personal best of 2:02.80 (also meeting the Meet of Champions’ qualifying mark). And Blackwell made it a trifecta with a bronze in the triple jump with a leap of 42’6.25”.
